Freedmen Institute of Transitional Education (FITE)

OUR STORY

Two educators had a dream of changing the way education was presented to students. They recognized a need for a new approach to secondary education in their community and created the Roseburg Salsa Company to fund their efforts.

In early 2018, the educators created The Freedmen Institute of Transitional Education (FITE) and partnered with the North Atlantic Regional High School to offer an innovative high school credit recovery program.

FITE DESCRIPTION

We do not hide the fact that we utilize technology as the primary educator in our program. Students are presented with subject content in engaging, relevant, and motivating learning experiences.

FITE’s curriculum focuses on skills and capabilities that will serve learners at work, in college, and in life. Our program addresses the essential basic and secondary math, communication, and critical thinking skills needed for success. Embedded within our instruction are literacy skills in comprehension, analysis, application, and synthesis. Students will also learn support skills to help them acquire new knowledge and abilities.

We do not hide the fact that we utilize technology as the primary educator in our program. Students are presented with subject content in engaging, relevant, and motivating learning experiences. FITE utilizes a combination of online adaptive learning technology and open educational resources to help students progress quickly through an individualized education plan. Our instructors utilize this “hack” to work one-on-one with their students to monitor and intervene when necessary in order to ensure success.

+ PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Students work with an instructor to create an individualized learning plan (ILP) to complete their diploma. The ILP will include courses the student needs, required study times, and weekly 1-on-1 meetings with faculty.

In order to earn credit, students must pass the final comprehensive exam of each course with a "B" or better.

+ COMPREHENSIVE EXAMS

The FITE initiative is a rigorous credit recovery program designed to ensure mastery of subject matter. Mastery is the objective, therefore, students are required to meet this standard through successful oral and written comprehensive exams.
